Programma, disciplina, maestro (T.M.H.S.) was created for the first edition of the Young Italian Art Prize and exhibited at the National Centre for Contemporary Arts in Rome (now MAXXI) in 2000. The protagonist emerges from a dark ground in a fantastic environment populated by marine animals. The spectator’s attention is attracted by the catalysing gaze of the young woman who appears to wish to make those observing participants in the particular emotive moment experienced in solitude. This interior condition frequently accompanies the characters painted by Margherita Manzelli. Her figures are born out of an overlaying of images: faces of people she has actually met combine with some of the artist’s own facial features.
