ACTING OUT. Italian artists in action

  • EXHIBITION 26 June – 7 October 2012 cuarated by Anne Palopoli and Monia Trombetta
    Claudia Gian Ferrari Hall
PERFORMANCE 19-20-21 June and 26 September curated by Anne Palopoli

MAXXI and Telecom Italia are presenting ACTING OUT. Italian artists in action, a performance season in the museum spaces and, to follow, an exhibition presenting the monumental works, the photographs, the videos and the documentation remaining from the performances. The projected is therefore based around the relationship between performative action and what remains through a reflection on the relationship between space, art work and the public, and on the relationship between the event and its documentation, between the visual experience and the performative action.

The artists involved, Alex Cechetti, Bruna Esposito and Marzia Migliora, will be realising a project that, starting out with the performative phase, concludes with the exhibition of the evidence of the performance. The work and its creative process are exhibited within the ambit of their reciprocal relations. The artists, using diverse idioms and methods, give rise to different narratives that share a desire to relate to the spatial reality of the museum and the social, political and historical reality of the world.

Marzia Migliora’s project is born out of her reflection on the word OCCUPY, understood in all its myriad facets and connotations. The analysis of its meaning that gave rise to this research has found a raison d’etre in the historical moment we are currently experiencing.

    18.45 encounter with the artist

A number of nude dancers traverse the museum spaces, like ghosts or apparitions, trying not to be seen by the visitors: they show themselves and disappear, visions in diverse parts of the same building. Dance becomes an operation of invisibility, a way of measuring space.

“Every time I see, amidst the asphalt and the concrete, plants and flowers rocking on the buzzing Ape trucks of the mobile florists, I follow them with a gaze that takes on a charge of sweet good humour”. (B.E.)
Bruna Esposito will use an Ape Piaggio full of plants and flowers, which she herself defines as a “monument to beauty”.

In the last event in the ACTING OUT _ Italian artists in action season at MAXXI, Flavio Favelli is presenting his La Vetrina dell’Ostensione V, specifically conceived for the museum.
The performance is part of a series initiated in 2001 in which the artist puts himself in the spotlight: in a vitrine that becomes a form of stage, the artist establishes new relationships with objects, small items of furnishings and people, giving rise to diverse actions.
Flavio Favelli moves through the performative space in the presence of the public as if he were in front of a mirror that requires some one to look at it for it to be activated, arousing ever-different meanings among the spectators.
