59-year-old Daniel Blake from Newcastle has always worked as a carpenter. However, he needs help from the State for the first time in his life. Daniel meets Katie, a single mother with two little children, called Daisy and Dylan. The only option Katie has to get away from her London hostel room is that of accepting an apartment in a town she does not know, five hundred kilometres from London. Daniel and Katie end up in no man’s land, imprisoned by the oppressive bureaucratic system characterising the English social system. The typical rhetoric of contemporary England, which divides the population into those who work hard and those who take advantage of state subsidies so as not to work, underlies the whole story.
