A meeting with an innovative and eclectic artist, a pioneer of performance art

Born in New York in 1936, Joan Jonas was part of the New York avant-garde in the 1970s, starting out as a sculptor before distinguishing herself as a performance artist. She was to be one of the first to incorporate video in her performances, revealing herself to be an innovative and eclectic artist.

Beginning with dance and black and white videos in which she used the body and movement as the sole expressive medium, the artist continually developed her idiom. Constantly amplifying her research with new expressive codes. She currently lives and works in New York and teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but her life has been marked travels that have help enrich and inspire her work. Her most recent appearances in Italy include the exhibition Light Time Tales at the Hangar Bicocca in Milan in 2014 and her participation in the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015, in which she represented the United States and won a prize for her installation in the American pavilion.
