Screening of the film In the name of God (India, 1992)
MAXXI B.A.S.E. multi-purpose hall – free admittance
Ever since obtaining independence in 1947, India has officially been a secular state and yet religious fundamentalism is a widespread phenomenon, especially among the Hindus. The film focuses on the campaign conducted by the militant Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to destroy a 16th Century mosque at Ayodhya, said to have been constructed by Babar, the first Mughal emperor. The episode resulted in major religious disorder and numerous deaths, especially following the demolition of the mosque by the Hindus in the December of 1992 when over 5,000 people were killed in India and Pakistan. Filmed prior to the demolition of the mosque, In the Name of God examines the motives of all the parties involved in the conflict.
